Developing an innovative and fun alarm clock for the iPhone requires lots of mockups, prototypes and real-world tests. Browse the early Melatonin sketches and mockups and see how the app has grown and evolved, from drawing board to App Store.

The very first Melatonin mockups. They already show the main app concept: a rising sun, a messenger (here represented by a bird) and a way to easily set the alarm time. The first image shows the integration with the birthday calendar, a feature that made it into Melatonin 1.0. The second image shows that we considered displaying current weather information, an idea we abandoned later. |

Below are early mockups for the settings: alarm time, alarm sound and theme selection. |

We did not like the look of the standard iPhone OS controls on top of our own, custom UI. Therefore, we decided to completely customize all controls in the settings screen. The image on the right shows the final design for the screen that allows to set the sleep timer. |

The final result for the Hello Birdie theme |
Now that we had settled on our first theme, we evaluated concepts for the two remaining themes. Several ideas were sketched and tested. Some ideas made it into the final application, such as the Oh Crab theme below.

The Ice Ice Birdie theme was one of our favorites as well: |

A lot of themes haven't made it (yet), such as the 'Fishy theme': |

Or the much beloved Mr. Pigeon: |
Although it had many fans internally, the chickens theme did not make it into Melatonin 1.0 either. There is still a chance that it will show up in a future update…
